It's no coincidence, then, that it is used for characters in all kinds of fiction literature. Star Trek does not fall behind at that. The first character with feline DNA to come up was M'Ress, the communication's officer aboard the USS Enterprise in the animated series.
The Kzinti, warlike race imported from Larry Niven's novels and tales set in Known Space (The Warriors, The Soft Weapon, Man-Kzin Wars, and others) also turn up as pirates in the animation in the episode The Slaver Weapon (01x14) and a representative of the race in the Elysian Council in The Time Trap (01x12). It is probably the first crossover event between an animated series and a novel!
This sentient species was first called Caitians in a biographical text about M'Ress. The text adds the species is descendant from the Kzinti, just like the Romulans are from the Vulcans (info reinforced by StarTrek.com). The Kzinti are called the Mirak in the Star Fleet Command II games. Also, the Caitians are called Ferasans in the game Star Trek Online, and Regulans in two ST RPG books. All latter names are used due to copyright issues.
In the animated series, we can also see the Vedala, in The Jihad, and considered one of the oldest races in the quadrant.
In the films: in The Final Frontier, James Kirk is attacked by a 3-breasted stripper which is said to be a female Kzin, a Kzinrrett (according to Larry Niven's nomenclature for his books); in The Voyage Home, there is an Admiral and a Commodore in the Federation Council; in Into the Darkness, Caitian twins appear in bed with Kirk.
As a curiosity, M'Ress is depicted as a green-haired blue alien in the audio edition of a comics edited by Peter Pan Records.
Lion-like Caitians appear in the comics ST The Animated Series Comics where they were drawn by Masao Okazaki.
So, each franchise works with their own version of what a Caitian would be, and as it happens here on Earth, ethnic variations are great out there in the extraterrestrial cultures, at least as far as the ST Universe is concerned.
